District Internship Program

Program Description: 

Senator Roger Niello’s District Office keeps the local community connected with the legislative work taking place in the State Capitol. This task is done through constituent correspondence, community events, and everyday involvement with the community. Senator Niello’s District Internship Program provides an excellent chance for high school students, college students, and recent college graduates to get involved in the legislative process while exploring a career in public service. 

Qualifications: 

  • A teachable spirit and enthusiasm for learning
  • A willingness to work with others and be a part of something bigger than yourself 
  • A desire to grow professionally and make yourself more marketable in a competitive world 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet research skills 
  • Excellent written and communication skills 
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving 
  • 18 years of age or older.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Interns will have the opportunity to learn about the operation of the California State Senate and current legislation. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing constituent correspondence, handling basic office operations, maintaining databases, researching legislation, working with government agencies, assisting with special projects, and networking with business leaders and elected officials. Senator Niello’s District Office is the hub of constituent affairs and outreach and primarily serves as a customer service organization. The office responds quickly to the needs of the Senator’s constituents. The District Office staff are actively involved in the community, working directly with local business and community leaders.

Program Opportunities:

The internship has flexible hours, and our interns are eligible for a letter of recommendation from Senator Niello based on time of service. Interns may also qualify for course credit from school. This is a great opportunity where participants may obtain paid positions with local and statewide campaigns, legislative offices, public relations firms, political consulting firms, and government affairs.
