Stop waste, deliver results: Senate Republicans outline budget priorities ahead of State of the State

As Governor Gavin Newsom prepares to deliver his combined State of the State address and proposed 2026-2027 budget, California Senate Republicans are urging a renewed focus on government accountability to stop the waste of taxpayer dollars and deliver real results for Californians.

“As a result of the majority party’s spending habit, we will be faced with a deficit for the foreseeable future. There must be stronger accountability and management of existing funds so that we can address priorities that benefit Californians,” said Senator Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks), vice chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee.

“Governor Newsom’s speech will highlight a lot of claimed wins, but Californians see the lack of results every day,” said Senate Republican Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego). “Year after year, his policies have pushed opportunity out of state while driving the cost of living to ever new heights for working families. Californians deserve a government that uses their tax dollars to fix the quality of life in this state, not fund the governor’s vanity projects.”

California Senate Republicans unveiled their budget priorities last month, emphasizing a results-driven approach that focuses on:

  • Lowering housing costs for renters and helping more Californians buy homes.

  • Keeping Californians safe from crime and wildfires.

  • Supporting hospitals and access to care for rural Californians.

  • Eliminating fraud in Medi-Cal and other assistance programs.

  • Investing in water and emergency services for disasters and droughts.

  • Funding for UC and CSU so California’s students can afford to be educated in California.

  • Supporting job creators by reducing the Unemployment Insurance debt burden placed on them.
