Two Senator Niello Bills Pass Out of the Assembly Suspense File

Dear Neighbor‚

On Aug. 29‚ legislators in the Assembly and Senate Appropriations Committees chose the fate of hundreds of the legislative proposals that are on the respective “Suspense Files.” These files contain bills that have a price tag. The threshold varies depending on the funding source from the budget.

This year is the first year of the two-year legislative cycle‚ and the bills that were approved by the Appropriations Committees continue to the next step while the bills that did not make the cut will not move forward this year.

I am happy to share that two of my measures that were on the Assembly Suspense File passed. I introduced Senate Bill 568 to make sure the requirement to have epinephrine available in public schools is applied in all school programs including preschool.

In 2014‚ the Legislature passed and the Governor signed Senate Bill 1266 authored by Senator Bob Huff‚ which required epinephrine in public schools. That measure has ensured that our school health professionals have the medication on hand to provide lifesaving treatment. My bill provides the necessary clarification to this requirement so that our public schools and their programs are prepared to assist any student that may be in need of epinephrine.

With the support of the County of Placer‚ I authored Senate Bill 359. This measure establishes clear guidelines for the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration and confirms that the existing tax exemptions for fuels—like diesel and compressed natural gas—used by public transit operators also apply to counties that operate their own transit services directly.
