Dear Neighbor,
I wanted to share some updates from the legislature. As always, please reach out to my office if there is anything we can do to assist.
Sgt. Nicole Gee Memorial Highway

On Wednesday, I was honored to welcome family members of Sergeant Nicole Gee with Roseville’s Assemblyman Joe Patterson to watch the installation of the Sgt. Nicole Gee Memorial Highway signs. A Roseville native, Nicole Gee enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2017. During the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, she was killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021 while serving her country.
I was a proud principal co-author of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 126 last year to designate a portion of Interstate 80 as the Sgt. Nicole Gee U.S. Marine Corps Memorial Highway. After gaining unanimous support from both the Assembly and Senate, we worked with Caltrans to procure and display signs to honor the life and service of Sgt. Gee.
As people drive on this portion of Interstate 80, we will all be reminded of the sacrifice, duty, and commitment that Sgt. Gee has displayed so courageously on behalf of her country.
Redistricting
Throughout the week at the State Capitol, I worked to halt the majority party’s attempt to push the redistricting measures through the legislature. The majority party drafted new congressional districts to undermine the work of California’s citizen-led commission in charge of redistricting.
Yesterday, the redistricting shenanigan exposed the majority party’s true intent: to dismantle a voter-approved system. Democratic leaders, who were opposed to the voter-approved independent redistricting commission from the get-go, are using this opportunity as a strategic first step toward abolishing it.

Politicians shouldn’t override the will of the voters and draw their own gerrymandered districts. You can watch my speech on the Senate floor here: https://youtu.be/6_yLyPRttFU.
Herald Fire Prevention Council Community Breakfast

At Herald Fire Prevention Council's first Community Breakfast, 40 residents attended and discussed topics like fire prevention and insurance. I was happy to be part of the speakers to answer questions about what is going on in the state legislatures including my role as the Vice Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee. It was great to witness the community working together to improve its fire prevention and resolve issues. Thank you to the volunteers and other speakers who made the session engaging and productive.
Parental Rights Rally at the Capitol

On Tuesday, hundreds of fierce advocates gathered at the State Capitol in opposition to Assembly Bill 495. This bill raises significant concerns about child safety and could undermine parental rights by opening dangerous loopholes in custody transfers. I already voted against AB 495 in the Senate Judiciary Committee and will continue efforts to stop this dangerous bill from moving forward.
It’s an honor to serve you.
Sincerely‚
ROGER NIELLO
Senator‚ Sixth District
